The concentration of wealth is a key component of the recent rise in economic inequality in many Western societies. Consequently, scholars across the social sciences have begun to study the longterm evolution, composition and unequal distribution of wealth as well as its causes and consequences both within and across nations. So far, however, the question of how societies react to the growing concentration of economic advantage has received little systematic attention. Is wealth inequality considered problematic by policy makers and citizens – and if so, why and with which consequences? This workshop aims to shed light on the political and moral economy of wealth and wealth inequality.

The workshop brings together scholars from sociology, political science, history and philosophy who work on topics that broadly relate to these aspects. Participation is open to others who are interested. They should register in advance by writing an email to Patrick Sachweh (sachweh@uni-bremen.de) or Till Hilmar (till.hilmar@uni-bremen.de) before 25 November.

Higher education expanded rapidly worldwide after World War II. At the beginning of the period, there were many doubts about its contribution to development. These negative assessments receded over time, and changed to positive ones with neoliberal global hegemony: Education was central to the model, and expanded very rapidly. In particular, many social effects of higher education were reconceptualized as economically valuable “service sector” activities. Recent global attacks on neoliberalism – and on its higher educational component – may alter these trends, weakening and redirecting educational foci.

The ‘social investment state’, ‘activation’ and ‘prevention’ have been central programmatic concepts of the last two decades. In view of the marked inequalities in our societies and the consequences of climate change, which are now visible to all, the attention of social policy research must now be drawn to a different issue: What does a socially and ecologically sustainable social policy look like? A first definition will serve as a basis for the conference: A socially sustainable welfare state can be understood as a state which actively prevents the emergence of inequality and poverty. And an ecologically sustainable welfare state is based on a set of integrated climate, energy and social policies that does not allow new social inequalities to emerge from the fundamental transformation of energy systems.

Social policy research has not yet dealt intensively with the question of sustainability and the interdependencies between energy policy, climate policy and social policy. Thus, the conference is a prelude to an expanded understanding of the tasks of this research area.

In the first part of the conference, the idea of a sustainable social policy will primarily be related to recent developments in German social policy. The second day will focus on international comparative research perspectives and theoretical questions. Therefore, lectures and discussions will be held in German on the first day and in English on the second day.
