The conference brings together an interdisciplinary and international group of junior and senior scholars who are working on the history of social policies and the welfare state in the Global South from a transnational, entangled or global history perspective.
Special attention will be paid to: Cooperation between countries of the Global South, transfer of knowledge from the South to the North and within the Global South, the entanglement between social policies and development, as well as the transnational circulation of narratives concerning social problems and the policies desired to solve them.
Demographic change and evolving demands on healthcare systems, especially with respect to the provision of healthcare and nursing care for a growing number of older people, will be among the greatest social challenges of the coming decades.
The pursuit of health equity in ageing societies raises several questions: on the one hand there are persisting health inequities related to a social gradient in health. On the other hand, as resources are limited, social challenges to healthcare and the healthcare system will always entail questions of distributive justice. Health equity is therefore a central cross-sectional topic of health research in Bremen.
The conference, organised by the High-profile Area of Health Sciences at the University of Bremen, will serve as a forum for discussing these key challenges of healthcare in ageing societies. The conference focusses on four main topics:
- Health - equity - health inequalities
- Qualification requirements and the training of healthcare professionals
- Prevention - Healthy Ageing
- Ageing and Diversity: requirements for health services
Keynote-Speakers are Prof. James Nazroo (Manchester, UK), Prof. Jeanine Suurmond (Amsterdam, NL), Prof. Carol Hall (Nottingham, UK) and Prof. Clemens Tesch-Römer (DZA, Berlin).
The conference will host a public evening event at the famous Bremen Town Hall where researchers and policy makers will discuss necessary requirements for a just health system.

Scientific goals of the conference:
The overall aim of the proposed conference is therefore to intentionally foster the development of life course theories and methods. We will accomplish this goal by assembling a group of strategically chosen international experts, and by providing an originally structured forum within which to debate the next era of life course studies and to identify the priorities, gaps, and solutions necessary to advance an ambitious vision. The proceedings and outcomes of the conference will be published in a scientific outlet and disseminated broadly to further stimulate the field.
The first aim of the conference is to identify building blocks and to discuss how they fit in a comprehensive framework that views the life course as a set of complex multidimensional, multilevel, and dynamic processes. Ideas are drawn from the social sciences and from other disciplines studying human lives from their multidimensional, multilevel and temporal perspectives. A multidisciplinary framework requires significant fertilization across disciplines and fields.
The second aim of the conference is to survey and assess the most innovative quantitative and qualitative methodical tools of life course research, especially those that will yield knowledge that will advance theories of life course processes. Such theories are ambitious and make great demands of empirical research. The methodical challenges involved in modelling complex processes are far from being mastered in contemporary research.
