German Research Foundation supports establishment of a division for anthropological research data
SOCIUM is the only German research institute in social sciences which deals with theoretical and empirical questions of inequality, social policies and their social and political interdependencies. The interdisciplinary research focuses on the social, economic, political, cultural, organizational, legal, historical and sociomedical conditions and effects of social inequality, public social policies and their interdependencies. The research includes a mix of sociology, political and health sciences, economics and legal aspects.
How the birth of a child affects the content of women’s work is examined by Wiebke Schulz (SOCIUM University of Bremen) and Gundula Zoch (University of Oldenburg) in a new study published in the Journal of Marriage and Family. Read more ...

The German Research Foundation (DFG) is supporting the Collaborative Research Center 1342 "Global Dynamics of Social Policy" in a third phase for another four years until the end of 2029. Das SOCIUM trauert um Claus Offe, der am 01.10.2025 verstorben ist. Er kam 1988 als Professor für Politikwissenschaft an die Universität Bremen und gehörte zu den Gründungsvätern des interdisziplinären Zentrums für Sozialpolitik (ZeS), eines der Vorläuferinstitute des SOCIUM. Hier baute er, anfangs zusammen mit Ulrich K. Preuß, die Abteilung „Theorie und Verfassung des Wohlfahrtsstaates“ auf, der er bis zu seinem Wechsel an die Humboldt Universität zu Berlin 1995 vorstand. Read more ...
Inwiefern beeinflusst ökonomische Deprivation das Risiko, körperliche Gewalt in Partnerschaften zu erleben? Eine aktuelle Studie der Universität Bremen und der Europa-Universität Flensburg liefert dazu empirische Hinweise für Deutschland: Arbeitslosigkeit und eine Unzufriedenheit mit der finanziellen Haushaltssituation als Indikatoren für wirtschaftliche Benachteiligung erhöhen das Risiko körperlicher Partnerschaftsgewalt gegen Frauen.
