"Poverty in the Media" - Panel discussion on October 19 and 20, 2022 in Bremerhaven and Bremen with participation of the FIS junior research group "The 'Activating Welfare State' - A Political and Social History of German Social Policy, 1979-2017"

The FIS junior research group "The 'Activating Welfare State' - A Political and Social History of German Social Policy, 1979-2017", together with the Media Council of the Bremen State Media Authority, the State Agency for Civic Education and the Bremen Chamber of Employees, invites you to a panel discussion on "Poverty in the Media" in Bremerhaven and Bremen.

Stigmatizing reporting on people in precarious living situations has characterized poverty reporting in Germany, especially since the Hartz reforms. TV programs such as "Hartz und herzlich" or "Armes Deutschland - Stempeln oder abrackern?" are examples. The "poor houses" of Bremen and Bremerhaven are repeatedly brought into focus here. Parallel media worlds emerge in the reports. Respectful reporting on poverty does not take place. Professor Bernd Gäbler has investigated this in his study "Armutszeugnis - wie das Fernsehen die Unterschichten vorführt" and has taken a closer look at the so-called "Unterschichtenfernsehen". At the event, he will present the results of his study and then discuss them with journalist Julia Fritzsche and sociologist Olaf Groh-Samberg.

The following questions will be addressed:

What role does poverty play in Germany, in Bremen or Bremerhaven in the media? How are poverty and social origin portrayed in Germany? And what challenges does quality journalism face?

Even in the programs of public broadcasters, alternative portrayals tend to be the exception. This is why the event aims to provide impulses for media professionals. We are looking forward to a lively discussion with interested people, representatives from journalism, science with or without poverty background and with you!
